Design Obsession of the Day

Despite the fact that I now have the choice of reading my e-books on my smartphone or my tablet (or even listening to them on my hi-fi, via Bluetooth) my little Kindle will always have a place in my heart. I recently bought an original Amazon Kindle case for it, which by the way is very nice and handy, but was still super- excited to discover these online. Klevercase currently offers a few different versions (‘Great Gatsby’, ‘Secret Garden’, ‘Great Expectations’, ‘Alice in Wonderland’ etc.) for a range of devices (Amazon Kindle, Kobo, iPad Mini, Nexus7 & Samsung Galaxy Tab 3), but I immediately fell in love with the above gorgeous version of ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’. With brilliant comments & 5 stars received from most of the reviewers, it sounds like a sturdy and girly chic alternative to my current utilitarian choice – and at £24.90 it’s not unreasonably priced, either. Plus, it’s absolutely perfect for Spring (and you can even buy a matching Journal or Diary)! Do drop by the website and have …

Back on (the) track

Back around the end of 2013 I had a nasty calf strain injury, during my training for a scheduled 10K. Following the ensuing (and quite painful) physiotherapy sessions, I somehow lost my focus and eventually never got back into my training routine. It goes without saying, of course, that I have been feeling guilty (not to mention grumpy, due to the lack of my precious “happy” running hormones) ever since. A few days ago I decided to finally remedy that, by registering for the Authentic Athens Marathon 5K (09/11/2014) and scheduling training for it ASAP. I’m approaching this conservatively (thus the 5K), since I haven’t really done any sort of running since my injury and am a bit worried as to how my muscle will respond – but hoping all will be ok. Is anyone out there training for a similar event (maybe we can motivate each other)? Are there any (local) runner/ readers out there interested in joining me for training/ on the day? Also, if you happen to have any good training tips, …

Beauty Obsession of the Day

Been looking for a good, once-a-week, mask to add to my beauty regime and this (currently on the ‘What’s New’ section of Cult Beauty, here) seems to fit the bill perfectly. According to the website, it “contains White Clay to gently draw embedded toxins from the skin, combined with anti-bacterial Lavender to battle blemishes into submission” and is great for “spot-prone or easily offended complexions”, leaving skin soft while still combating excess oiliness. At around 33€ for the 100mm tube, I personally find it reasonably priced and will be giving it a try in the near (if not immediate – since I’ve been mulling over a Cult Beauty purchase anyway) future…

‘Breaching’ for Joy…

Here’s the latest (non beauty/fashion/design etc.) piece of news I’m hugely excited about, having signed countless online petitions about it throughout the years! Finally someone took action to stop Japan’s annual “scientific” whaling expedition and expose it for what it really is – a cover for continued commercial hunting. With the support of Humane Society International (HSI), Greenpeace and other environmental and animal rights NGOs, Australia took Japan to the United Nation’s International Court of Justice, which has now announced its ruling: Japan’s whaling is not scientific (and therefore illegal) and must stop immediately. Great news for everyone (but Japan, I suppose)! But there’s still lots to do… for both whales and other spieces. If you happen to be so inclined, you can start by clicking here (to become a HSI ‘Wildlife Defender’ and support future actions to end wildlife abuses around the world) or here (to join Greenpeace’s call for the defense of the Antarctic Ocean, by telling politicians to create a vast network of marine reserves to protect species like emperor penguins, minke …

Design Obsession of the Day…

Being a fan of clever design, but also a bit of a self-proclaimed activist, I tend to love ideas that combine both in one clever, “green” package. So, having recently bumped into this, I just knew I had to share… Bedol (What’s Next) is an American company that “brings creative ideas for your home or office in the form of unique and innovatively designed products“. With 20 years of experience & clients such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and the Museum of Modern Art, there’s seems to be some serious oomph behind the company name – which makes me think their latest gadget might just work… The Bedol Water Clock comes in a variety of shapes (pictured above is the ‘Squirt’ model, which is meant to resemble a splash of water), sizes & colors and claims to keep perfect time – with no need for batteries or electricity. According to the company, its technology “converts the ions in the water to clean energy power”, with one fill of water allowing the clock to work …
