Free US Roadside Zoo Bears

For decades, bears have been held in barren concrete pits and tiny cages, where they are forced to beg for food and are deprived of everything that is natural and important to them at roadside zoos in Cherokee, North Carolina. A recent PETA investigation of one of these facilities revealed that staff members were deliberately depriving bears of food and that the animals are so stressed from being constantly confined to small concrete pits that they pace repeatedly and gnaw at the metal cage bars. Today, the tribal council will meet to discuss closing the bear pits. The council members need to hear from as many people as possible about the importance of closing the bear pits and sending the bears to reputable sanctuaries. Help PETA by adding your name to the petition.

Ban Thailand’s Ivory Trade

Every day in the savannas and forests of Africa, elephants are being gunned down for their ivory tusks. Across the continent, tens of thousands of these majestic animals are being slaughtered each year. In many places the species has already been poached to extinction. If we don’t act now there may be no wild elephants left. – WWF 474,419 of us have put our names on a (WWF) letter to the Thai Prime Minister, asking for her to ban the Thai ivory trade. Maybe you should consider joining us…

A Cruelty- Free 2013…

(a.k.a. Post a Week 3 ~ 10-16/01/2011) In my e-mail today: In 2009 the European Union outlawed all animal testing for cosmetics within its borders. This same law also provides for an EU-wide ban on the sale of cosmetics that have been animal tested elsewhere in the world, beginning in 2013. For companies, this has meant choosing between kicking their bad animal testing habit or having their products pulled off the shelves in Europe (the largest global market for cosmetics). However, Humane Society International has just learned that European bureaucrats are considering introducing legislation that could delay the overdue sales ban—perhaps by years. If successful, such legislation would mean unnecessary suffering and death for many thousands of animals. But it doesn’t have to happen. TAKE ACTION We need to act quickly and remind EU decision makers that caring consumers around the world expect shop shelves to be cruelty-free, and that they have a moral obligation to uphold the sales ban. Please sign HSI’s “Cruelty Free 2013” petition today. Thank you for all you do for …

Good News…

I love having good news delivered to my mailbox – and these last few days have been great! Two of the activist campaigns I’ve been supporting sent me e-mails, informing me of their respective successes 🙂 I was so excited I just wanted to share with you all. First off, the campaign Greenpeace had launched to stop the building of a third airway at Heathrow paid off. All plans have apparently been cancelled – thanks to the thousands of people who “bought” their respective tiny pieces of the plot and put their names down on the owners’ deed. Here’s how it all started in Jan. 2009: Join the plot! Sign up for a plot of land, a bit of climate campaign history What would happen if somebody bought a piece of land right in the middle of the proposed third runway site at Heathrow Airport near London? Well, we’ll find out… because that’s what we’ve just done! It’s all over the UK news — and over 20,000 people have joined in already — all of …
