Free US Roadside Zoo Bears

For decades, bears have been held in barren concrete pits and tiny cages, where they are forced to beg for food and are deprived of everything that is natural and important to them at roadside zoos in Cherokee, North Carolina. A recent PETA investigation of one of these facilities revealed that staff members were deliberately depriving bears of food and that the animals are so stressed from being constantly confined to small concrete pits that they pace repeatedly and gnaw at the metal cage bars. Today, the tribal council will meet to discuss closing the bear pits. The council members need to hear from as many people as possible about the importance of closing the bear pits and sending the bears to reputable sanctuaries. Help PETA by adding your name to the petition.

On my Reading List

A selection from Waterstones’ New & Coming Soon Titles, 25 Feb 2013 Religion for Atheists: A Non-believer’s Guide to the Uses of Religion by Alain de Botton http://www.waterstones.com/waterstonesweb/products/alain+de+botton/religion+for+atheists/9378197/ Here’s the thing: According to my official papers, I’m “Christian Orthodox”. In reality I’m more of an agnostic theist (and probably an apathetic one at that). I am offended by and despise how religion (and some “all-mighty, benevolent” God) always seems to be the excuse behind the most disgraceful atrocities of human history and I will probably forever be hard pushed to pick up (and spend any serious amount of time on) most books on the subject. Despite (or because of) all that, I am intrigued by this book – which claims to  “pick and choose from the thousands of years of advice assembled by the world’s great religions to get practical insights on art, community, love, friendship, work, life and death” and propose ways in which to gracefully and spiritually  navigate our lives. Chic Animal Print

My take on a more “everyday” version of the animal print. Half high-street, half high-end chic. For a more animal (& finance) friendly approach, try similar non-leather bag designs. Ban Thailand’s Ivory Trade

Every day in the savannas and forests of Africa, elephants are being gunned down for their ivory tusks. Across the continent, tens of thousands of these majestic animals are being slaughtered each year. In many places the species has already been poached to extinction. If we don’t act now there may be no wild elephants left. – WWF 474,419 of us have put our names on a (WWF) letter to the Thai Prime Minister, asking for her to ban the Thai ivory trade. Maybe you should consider joining us…
